Lake Huntington is a nutrient rich lake located in the Hamlet of Lake Huntington, within the Town of Cochecton in Sullivan County, NY.
Harmful algal blooms started to plague Lake Huntington approximately 10 years ago.
Most recently a confirmed harmful algal bloom occurred in 2014, suspicious blooms have now occurred every year up to and including 2022.
Toxic algae blooms plague the lake during the warm summer months.
The lake can no longer support trout and certain species of fish due to low oxygen levels.
Runoff water from agriculture, deforested land, new construction, and salted roads are continuing to add to the nutrient levels and decrease oxygen in the lake.
If no action is taken the aquatic population will die off and toxic algae blooms will consume the lake during summer months.
Algae blooms have closed water bodies in the past due to the potential harm to humans and pets.
Lake Huntington fits into the “Impaired” category.
